LNT & MOOP: What They Mean and Why They Matter

LNT: Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace (LNT) is one of the core principles of Burner culture—a commitment to caring for the environment by ensuring we leave every space cleaner than we found it. It means being mindful of everything we bring in, everything we use, and everything we leave behind. LNT encourages planning ahead, minimizing waste, cleaning as we go, and taking responsibility for our impact so future participants and the planet can thrive.

MOOP: Matter Out Of Place

MOOP stands for Matter Out of Place, which is anything that doesn’t naturally belong in the environment—glitter, bottle caps, feathers, food scraps, zip ties, even tiny bits of trash or debris. If it didn’t grow there or blow there on its own, it’s MOOP.

Practicing LNT and staying aware of MOOP helps protect the community, the event, and the land in addition to keeping the camp itself in good standing!

When everyone takes part, we preserve the magic of the space, respect our hosts and the world around us, and ensure the experience can continue for years to come.

Pack it in, pack it out—and leave no trace of your good time.
